The Challenge

When my client first discovered this apartment, he immediately recognised its character and potential, but he was uncertain whether it could be transformed into a home that truly suited his family's lifestyle. He and his wife were looking for a long-term family home for themselves and their two children, with enough flexibility to accommodate guests and remote working.

The existing layout presented several obstacles. The property had previously been used as a house in multiple occupation (HMO), resulting in an excessive number of rooms throughout the apartment. This created a fragmented and disconnected layout, with spaces that felt compartmentalised and inefficient for family living. The kitchen was also small, enclosed and separated from the dining area, making it unsuitable for the way the family enjoyed cooking, gathering and entertaining.

The family wanted a home centred around social living, with a spacious open-plan kitchen and dining area where they could cook, host friends and spend time together. They also required three family bedrooms, a guest room that could double as a home office, and a complete rethinking of the bathroom arrangements to better support modern family life.

The Solution

My approach focused on creating a more connected, functional and family-oriented home through a complete reorganisation of the internal layout.

The most significant transformation was the opening up of the kitchen and dining areas. By removing and reconfiguring internal partitions, we created a generous open-plan living space that now forms the heart of the home. The new kitchen is significantly larger, offering improved functionality, increased storage and a direct connection to the dining area, allowing the family to interact and entertain effortlessly.

The apartment was carefully re-planned to provide three well-proportioned family bedrooms, alongside a flexible guest room that also functions as a home office when required.

The bathroom layout was completely reimagined to better serve both family life and entertaining. The new arrangement includes a private master en-suite, a dedicated family bathroom and a separate guest WC located off the hallway, providing convenient access for visitors without intruding on the family's private spaces.

The result is a bright and welcoming family home that feels both spacious and connected.
