The Challenge
The brief for this project was to design a bedroom for a newly married couple around a king-size bed that had already been selected by the clients as the statement piece. The room also featured an existing dark floor finish, which needed to be incorporated into the overall design. The challenge was to create a cohesive scheme that complemented both the existing flooring and the chosen bed, while ensuring the bed remained the undisputed focal point of the space.
The Solution
To ensure the bed remained the focal point of the room, I developed a palette centred around deep blue tones and warm brass accents, creating a sophisticated backdrop that enhanced the richness of its plum velvet upholstery without competing for attention. Dark walnut furniture was selected for the wardrobes and bedside tables, adding warmth and balance to the space while allowing the statement bed to stand out. The clean-lined cabinetry contrasts beautifully with the decorative wall mouldings, creating a harmonious balance between classic architectural detailing and contemporary furniture.
Soft linen curtains, sculptural ceramic table lamps, and a brushed brass chandelier introduce warmth and elegance, while a large traditional-style rug softens the dark timber flooring and anchors the furniture arrangement.
