The Challenge
The main challenge was to create a comfortable and functional bathroom within the limited space of a Victorian home, accommodating a bath, basin and WC without compromising the room's proportions or ease of movement.
The existing architecture introduced several constraints. A period window positioned centrally along one wall limited the placement of the shower, as direct exposure to water could damage the original timber frame. The bath also needed to be generously sized to accommodate the client's height, making the available floor space particularly challenging.
Another consideration was an existing boxed-in section of the ceiling concealing pipework, which created an uneven ceiling profile. Rather than allowing this architectural feature to feel out of place, the design needed to incorporate it naturally into the overall scheme.
The aim was to create a bathroom that felt elegant and true to the property's Victorian heritage, while responding carefully to the practical requirements of everyday use.
The Solution
The design centres around a freestanding bath, a feature the homeowners were determined not to compromise on despite the limited space. Creating an elegant focal point, the bath was carefully integrated into the layout to balance comfort, functionality and the proportions of the room. Its generous dimensions accommodate the client's height, while its positioning respects the original Victorian window and protects it from direct water exposure.
The vanity unit and mirror are positioned within easy reach upon entering the room, ensuring that the most frequently used area remains accessible without having to navigate around the bath. This thoughtful arrangement improves the flow of the space while maintaining a sense of balance and practicality.
To address the uneven ceiling, traditional decorative mouldings were introduced to create a more cohesive architectural composition. Painting the ceiling in a deep, dark shade helps visually soften the changes in level, transforming a practical constraint into a considered design feature that adds depth and character.
Aged brass fittings were selected throughout to reinforce the Victorian aesthetic, bringing warmth and a sense of authenticity to the space. Period-inspired tiles complement the brass finishes and architectural detailing, creating a timeless scheme that feels sympathetic to the history of the house.
The result is a thoughtfully designed bathroom that combines the elegance of a freestanding bath with carefully considered architectural details, respecting the property's Victorian heritage while accommodating the practical needs of modern living.
